Anthony Ferner returned to New Zealand in 1996 as Principal flute of the Christchurch Symphony after more than two decades in Australia, England and Europe where he was active as a soloist, conductor and teacher. He has held positions in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and played in the Ulster Symphony and. the New Zealand Symphony. He often appears as a concerto soloist and conductor with the Christchurch Symphony and is heard on Concert FM in New Zealand and is an active recitalist and chamber music musician. He is a graduate in music from the University of Canterbury and was the 1972 winner of the New Zealand National Concerto Competition. He studied in London at the Guildhall School of Music where he also took part in master classes of James Galway and Jean Pierre Rampal. In 1992 for he studied conducting as a postgraduate at the St Petersburg Conservatoire which led to engagements both as a conductor and flute soloist in Russia. While in Milan for two years, he taught flute worked as a soloist, conductor and vocal coach. Presently he is on the staff the University of Canterbury where he is Lecturer in Flute, chamber music coach and directs the New Music Ensemble. He was appointed Senior Fellow at the School of music in 2004 and also received the 2004 Vernon Griffiths Award for Musical Leadership. He is an AMEB examiner and has adjudicated flute competitions in both in Australia and New Zealand. In 2002 he was Artistic Director of the 6th National New Zealand Flute Convention held in Christchurch for which he received an Honorary Life Membership of the New Zealand Flute Society at the recent 7th National 2004 New Zealand Flute Convention in Auckland. In August 2003, supported by Creative New Zealand, he was invited to perform at the USA National Flute Convention held in Las Vegas.

Early in 2005 he was on a one month professional development trip took him to England and Europe where he observed teaching methods London, Manchester and Berlin while attending orchestral performances. In September and October he exchanged with professor of flute Laura Barron at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff Arizona where he taught and performed and also gave a recital and master class at the State University of Arizona in Phoenix.
